Obituary of Jeanette D Wilkins
Please share a memory of Jeanette to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Jeanette D. Wilkins (aka Jan, Mema) age 92, of Salt Lake City, Utah, died April 6, 2025. Jan was born on December 9, 1932, in Salt Lake City to Hugo and Deborah (Hilgendorf) Grieder. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 69 years, Howard G. Wilkins, and her brother Raymond (Doris) Grieder. She is survived by her brother Dennis (Barbara) Grieder and her children, Ron Wilkins (Jayne), Mel Wilkins (Cheryl) and Barbara Harding (Bob); four grandchildren, Amber Lorenzon (Chris), Thomas Wilkins (Amanda), Paul Wilkins (Angela), Ryan Wilkins (Addie) and three great-grandchildren, Poppy, Juniper and Tobias.
Jan met the love of her life, Howard G. Wilkins, when they were both working at the F.W. Woolworth Co. in Salt Lake City. After a whirlwind romance, they were married December 23, 1951. Through career promotions, Howard transferred multiple times across the country to Indiana, New Mexico, Texas, Kansas, Colorado and finally back to Utah. In all their moves, Jan was the primary force in providing a safe and loving home for raising a family with three kids.
Anyone who knew Jan will remember her as an especially kind and generous person who would make you comfortable with her sense of humor and infectious laugh. She was a wonderful host and cook who never allowed you to leave her home hungry. She loved animals, especially dogs and cats who were naturally drawn to her. Mema never met an animal that did not need a snack. Her love of gardening, bowling, playing cards with friends and bible studies were among her pastimes. She was extremely competitive and loved watching her children play sports. She also loved everything purple, as it was her favorite color.
She was always someone you could go to for help and advice. Her legacy is that of a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. So proud of you, mom, and happy that you and dad are together again.
