Gary Robert Heintz, 70, of Salt Lake City passed away unexpectedly on September 10, 2025.

Gary was born on November 14,1954 in Royal Oak, Michigan to Robert J. and Gloria Steiger Heintz. He was the second of six children. He grew up in Michigan, graduating from Shrine Catholic High School. He studied civil engineering at Michigan Tech University. A trip to Colorado during this time ignited his love for the Rocky Mountains. He transferred to Utah State University where he earned a degree in landscape architecture.

Gary married Judy Nielson in 1978. (Later divorced) They moved to Park City. Gary was in his element. During his workdays, he and his boss would spend long lunch breaks skiing on the amazing fresh powder. They moved to Salt Lake City where Gary worked in the planning division of Salt Lake City Corporation for 13 years.

It was during this time that his two sons and one daughter were born.

Gary centered his life around adventures in the outdoors. Whether it was skiing, hiking, biking, camping, jeeping, or just sight-seeing, he lived life to the fullest. His joy was in the journey. Always independent, he forged his own path.

He was skilled in land planning, design, and development. Many of his projects were focused in the surrounding mountain communities.

Gary is survived by his children Cory (Brittany), Sherry (David) Turner, Jeremy (Alyshia); grandchildren Alana and Aiden; and siblings Susan, Linda, David, and Nancy.

Preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Gloria, his brother Paul, and brother-in-law Mike.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Red Butte Garden and Arboretum or the National Park Foundation. The family would also like to encourage you to spend time honoring the beauty of nature in Gary’s memory.
