Each day, John was tried to find a way to connect with me. He called me EP and wrote lots of exclamation points next EP on my route sheet each day, He pointed it out to me. I knew it was his way of making sure I felt included and appreciated in a then department of mostly men. He continually shared pictures he had taken and music that he loved.
He told of experiences and other jobs that he had that he cherished. Once he trusted me enough to have me pick up a box from his doorstep when I was on a route in his area. Of curse it was a new expensive piece to put on his camera. He told about the birds and squirrels around his apartment building feeding them and past pictures he took of them. He was always very animated which made you feel like you were important and you worked in a special place where he enjoyed working with you. One day I told him that my knuckles got sore from knocking on doors. He gave me a golf ball to knock on doors with. I labeled it John’s professional door knocker. After John passed away, I showed it to one of our mutual friends. I will always keep it as a Momento of him and the kind of workplace he created. He was our dispatcher and at the computer at the window, where he could greet us in his own special way.
