"Sue"

June 19, 1934 - September 8, 2024

On September 8, 2024 Neoma Bowen Clugage, age 90, of Taylorsville UT, succumbed to cancer and congestive heart failure.

Born June 19th, 1934 in Attleboro MA, Neoma Lynn Bowen was the only child of Linford Melvin Bowen and Hester Neoma Houston. Neoma spent her childhood in Simonsville VT, graduating from Chester High School in 1952. High school is where she got nicknamed "Sue" by the principal who had a hard time pronouncing her first name. Neoma played the saxophone in marching bands and her parents' dance band, "Hester's Orchestra".

On September 26th , 1953, Neoma married Donald Herbert Carleton of Londonderry VT in Chester and in 1959 they moved to Colchester VT, where they raised four children. They separated in 1975 and she moved to Incline Village NV.

In Incline Village, Neoma found work as a secretary, splitting her time between a real estate office and an attorney. Her experience in the attorney's office led to a long career as a legal secretary, retiring from the Nevada Attorney General's office in 1999.

In 1986, she married Robert G. Clugage of Carson City. They lived in Minden NV until his death in 1991.

After retirement, Neoma moved briefly back to Colchester VT, but ultimately settled in Utah, near family.

Mom loved to walk in the morning, covering several miles every day until her first stroke in 2012. She loved watching "The View", which helped her keep up on current events. She loved words. Whether it was reading, which she did voraciously, or word search and crossword puzzles. Mom would not want you to be "lugubrious" or "morose" about her passing. Her doctors and caretakers regularly referred to her as "sassy" or "spicy", and marveled at how fast her wit still cracked at 90. Mom did not "suffer fools gladly"!

Neoma is survived by her son Andy (Debbie) Carleton of Taylorsville, daughters Linda Blair of Wilmington NC, and Joyce Carleton of Taylorsville. She's also survived by her grandchildren, Melinda (Kevin), Amber (Josh), Chelsea (Dallas), Eric (Jenna), Kyle, Sean (Cori), Kevin (Lucy), Eileen, Tim, and her eight great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Joanna Carleton Houston, and dearest friends, Sharon and Coralie.

The family would like to thank the entire staff of Legacy House in Taylorsville for their kind and compassionate care of our mother in her final days. Truly outstanding!

In accordance with Mom's wishes, there will be no ceremony, and her ashes will eventually be interred with her mother, Hester, and stepfather, Art Hemenway in the Simonsville Cemetery.

Mom loved donating to charities, large and small, so in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity. Raise a glass in her memory and don't forget to vote!
